Mick
Mick says...
Ouch.
Just thought I'd call in and tell you how I'm getting on as I'm almost feeling well enough to start moaning. Still convalescing in a hospital in Toulouse in the South of France where both my back and foot operations went well and have managed to avoid too much pain by taking large, horse size tablets of Paracetamol every six hours and lying as still as possible. I have progressed from being covered in drips, tubes and wires last week to a "stand-alone" human being but due to my back injury I still have to spend the majority of my time lying flat with no pillow, staring at the same patch of ceiling.

Still, it has given me the opportunity to listen to an awful lot of music: Al Green's "Let's Stay Together", "New Boots and Panties" by Ian Dury and the Blockheads, "Doolittle" by the Pixies, various tracks by the Associates and when the going gets tough, early Stooges tracks played at loud volume in headphones have been the highlights this week. I've also enjoyed the music, compilations and audio books people have sent me and a healthy dose of John Shuttleworth is seeing me through.

Although it's very nice in this modern, well equipped and spotlessly clean French hospital, I am looking forward to being able to converse fluently with the medical staff back home about pain management, bowel movements etc. instead of using my pathetic school boy French and a succession of complex hand signals. All depends on how fast the operation wound on my foot takes to heel.

Don't read on if you're squeamish but I thought I'd include a grizzly x-ray to show you how much I've done my foot in. My surgeon, Dr. Goldzac, tells me that a calcaneum (heel bone) fracture like mine is the second worst fracture possible; the worst being sustained by World War Two fighter pilots when their planes hit the ground and the control pedals were driven through their feet. What a lovely image that is. The large pin you can see in the x-ray, running through my foot, is removed in two weeks. I asked the surgeon how they removed it, expecting to be amazed with laser guided technology and an ingenious threading system but was informed they'd be using a pair of pliers and a small mallet. Won't be able to put weight on it for another six weeks but am very pleased to have such a talented and straight talking surgeon.

Just to let you know, I'm still working on new album with them other blokes, selecting mixes and sorting out the artwork etc. over the coming months so that it comes out in the New Year as planned. I'd like to thank all the people who have sent "get well soon" messages on myspace etc. and was quite surprised by the news coverage I'd generated, somebody told me I was a 'bong' on News at Ten; it must have been a slow week.

Looking forward to being up and about again and playing some gigs. It's all been a right royal pain in the ass but I'm still counting my lucky stars that it wasn't more serious

Love Mick

Having had similar-ish metalwork recently inserted into my mashed wrist I empathise! Bon courage with the recover and watch out for entertainment at airport scanners.

Glad to hear you're convalescing well, though.

Hi from the north of Spain, Mick! & Co. It´s great to hear from you...and know that you´re "gettin´better"...

Maybe it ain´t the best moment to tell you that I´m keepin´an eye on your expected new record, a Supergrass new album always reveals amazing secrets to me. Keep doing what you want to do (...we hail commercial suicide...).

You´re the only band nowadays able to record a new album and turn it into a real classic since the moment I listen to it just a few times.

Hope you get well, and I hope to hear the new record soon...

Los más grandes.
Hasta otra.

Nah, X-Rays have been done on the third album!
Hey Mick, just thought I'd pop on here to see how you were doing - what a trooper! You should get them to stick some posters on the ceiling above you; I used to wake up in my bedroom at my mum's to the I Should Coco poster with you boys screaming at me! God speed, it may be a while before you can tread on an effects pedal, but it'll be worth the wait for us.
Looking forward to when the mixing of the new album is finished. Be great to see you live again if possible, as we caught the end of the Live at Loch Lomond festival whilst on holiday up in the Highlands, but unfortunately could hear you playing when we arrived on site. By the time we got near the stage, you'd been and gone - bugger! We were expecting you to be later on the bill. Good job we've seen you at the UEA before - the last time - awesome gig that, cheers! (Also seen you play a couple of tunes at t4's Popbeach at Yarmouth a few years back.)
Rabbiting on now, sorry!
Much love from Norwich.

Hope you are on the mend! Was gutted to hear about the misfortune as I had got tickets for the Carling Academy performance in Oxford! Can't wait to see you all performing again, hopefully in the new venue - seems a lot more sterile than the old Zodiac though!!! Take it easy, look forward to hearing the new stuff.

I've been out of the loop. I guess I need to keep up better with the news and events. I just now found out about Road to Rouen (oddly on Wikipedia) thanks to the US music scene being as stupid as it is. I've loved you guys since I was in school back in the early 90's. God I'm old. That night I saw ya'll open for Radiohead in New Orleans was one of the most amazing nights of my life. It was an experience I hope I'll get the privilege of repeating some day.

Mick, all the best from one of your biggest American fans. Cheers mate. Email us a line if you can be bovvered. c.h.u.l.o.g.o.r.d.i.t.o.@yahoo.co.uk (with none of them "." ' s in the name.

Aw man...For some reason, supergrass just popped into my head and there is this bad news about Mick. Take care! We hope to see you soon in the States and, more importantly, that you are back on your feet soon.

Mick,
I got up this morning and put on "the X-Ray" record. Perfect for a Saturday morning. And one of you bass lines had me thinking all of a sudden of your back and that I hadn't checked in for a while to learn of your condition. And reading this today, the post from a few weeks ago I was sort of shitting my pants for you.
I have said in countless interviews since you guys broke through, that Supergrass is the best band in the world. They never understand what I mean but fuck em.
Your huge fan, Eric Matthews (Cardinal, Sub Pop/WEA/Empyrean, Universal, etc)

Best of health to you, really - get out of bed and get back at it.

love,
eric

Hey Mick.
I saw Supergrass at the Xfm Winter Wonderland last night for the first time and it was amazing. Your new material sounds brilliant. I think it was '345' that really go me moving. I'm so sorry to hear about your injuries. I only found out when Gaz announced it on stage. You were very much missed. I hope you get better soon, and I can't wait to see Supergrass again when you're back on your feet.
Cheers, and get well soon mate
